Acute HIV infection with rapid progression to AIDS BJID
Silva,Marcio de Oliveira; Bastos,Milena; Martins Netto,Eduardo; Gouvea,Nancy Alves de Lima; Torres,Alex Jose Leite; Kallas,Esper; Watkins,David I; Altfeld,Marcus; Brites,Carlos.
Acute HIV infection is rarely recognized as the signs and symptoms are normally unspecific and can persist for days or weeks. The normal HIV course is characterized by a progressive loss of CD4+ cells, which normally leads to severe immunodeficiency after a variable time interval. The mean time from initial infection to development of clinical AIDS is approximately 8-10 years, but it is variable among individuals and depends on a complex interaction between virus and host. Here we describe an extraordinary case of a man who developed Pneumocisits jiroveci pneumonia within one month after sexual exposure to HIV-1, and then presented with 3 consecutive CD4 counts bellow 200 cells/mm³ within 3 months, with no other opportunistic disease. HLA in Brazilian Ashkenazic Jews with chronic dermatophytosis caused by Trichophyton rubrum BJM
Sadahiro,Aya; Moraes,José Roberto Feresin; Moraes,Maria Elisa Hue; Romero,Matilde; Gouvea,Nancy Alves de Lima; Gouvea,Celso José; Ogusku,Mauricio Morishi; Campbell,Iphis; Zaitz,Clarisse.
The frequency of HLA (Human Leucocyte Antigens) was analyzed in 25 non-consanguineous Brazilian Ashkenazic Jews, resident in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, suffering from chronic dermatophytosis caused by T. rubrum, and in 25 non-infected individuals belonging to the same ethnic group. Statistically significant values (p<0.05) were observed for HLA-B14 associated with resistance to chronic dermatophytosis and HLA-DQB1*06 (p=0.05) possibly related to susceptibility. These findings suggest that genes on the chromosome 6, in the region of the major histocompatibility complex, may influence the development of chronic dermatophytosis.
